abstract = "This work relates deforesting data in two Amazon cities, Rio
Branco and Cruzeiro do Sul, in the State of Acre, with the
existence of access routes, specially roads and shows the
evolution of deforesting between 1985 and 2003, by means of
deforesting synthesis maps in the two municipalities. The data
used in this work were generated by PRODES of INPE, which uses
Landsat image processing methodology to estimate the deforesting
in the Brazilian Legal Amazon. The main conclusions are: a) having
considered a 1 km buffer along the roads, about 80% of this area
was identified as deforested, in the Rio Branco region and about
55% of it was identified as deforested in the Cruzeiro do Sul
region, in the period studied. b) the access routes are
deforesting facilitators, and they are the reason for its
occurrence in the two cities studied, and along the axis of the
River Juru{\'a}-Mirim, that is, a hydroway in the Rio Branco
                         municipality.",
